Sriracha Adventures!
I’ve never had a particularly high spice tolerance. That’s not to say I never ate spicy foods, I just ate them with a giant pitcher of water by my side, as I’m not a huge fan of milk. Anyway, for as long as I can remember, I’ve never been a fan of condiments either. I don’t really like ketchup since it tastes cloyingly sweet to me and I personally think mustard just tastes weird. That said, I didn’t hate condiments, I was just deterred away from trying a lot of them because of my distaste for the more common ones. One of the ones I stayed away from was Sriracha.
I tend to stay away from most hot sauces in general, I just think every time you put hot sauce on anything you run the risk of masking all the flavor with an unholy amount of spice. At the same time, I wasn’t really thinking about any of that when my friends offered to make grilled cheese sandwiches at 4 in the morning. I happily approved of their decision. However, I was less happy when she pulled out the Kraft American cheese singles. They tasted kinda bland to me and melted weird. You couldn’t do the signature cheese pull but it was whatever, a grilled cheese was still a grilled cheese so I took it anyway. My friend brought out all the extra stuff, like ketchup and Sriracha and asked if I wanted any. I was about to say no, until I remembered I had never even tried Sriracha. I could logically dislike ketchup because I had tried it a lot and knew for a fact I was not a fan, but I just assumed that I wouldn’t like Sriracha. So I decided to try it!
It felt like the best thing I had ever tasted in the moment. I was ecstatic! I had a new food obsession for the next month or two. For me, the experience made all the difference. Sitting in a dimly lit kitchen at four in the morning, eating grilled cheeses with people I was close to, talking about the most random things was very surreal in itself. They were really happy I liked it too because now we could all share a fondness for Sriracha as they are both people who enjoy a lot of spice on everything. The week after that, I must have made at least three or four of those sandwiches on my own. I could not get enough of them.
That was an experience I definitely wish I could go through again, trying Sriracha for the first time. But it was one of those experiences that I want to happen exactly the way it happened the first time. I would want it at the same time, with the same people, on the same day. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
I can relate to your dislike of Sriracha since I too have a low spice tolerance and dislike condiments (I haven't learned how to like Sriracha however). I loved how you connected your memories of an event to the taste of a food.
ReplyDeletePrithika I still can't believe you don't like ketchup and fries and dislike condiments, they are literally the best part of food, but to each their own. I did really enjoy this post though because you found one that you DID like and I love that you love it now. I also really like how you would want to live through this experience but just exactly as it happened in the first place.
ReplyDeleteDude, Sriracha is literally the best thing on this planet. I've put Sriracha on grilled cheeses, used it as dip for fries, and put it in salads. It's literally the best condiment on this planet, and I'm glad you realized it too.
ReplyDeleteSriracha is actually amazing. I find any excuse I can to put Sriracha on my food, it immediately makes it 100 times better! I agree it can really add a lot to typically bland foods like grilled cheese and make them much yummier.
ReplyDeleteAs an asian dude, I've been made a spicy food connoisseur at a young age. Whenever people tell me they can't handle siracha, I look them with a shameful eye. I think siracha sauce is in the middle of the pack where it isn't spicy and it isn't completely bland either. It's a great medium sauce for any type of food.
