Thank God for Lil Uzi

Something I’m extremely grateful for is music. I listen to music on a daily basis as do many of my other peers. It’s a way to connect with people, the feeling you get when you and your friend start singing to the same song is something that you can’t quite explain. Music has always been a big part of my life as I used to play two instruments. But the only music I would listen to was from Mix 94.5 with Tim and Sarah. I never really had any preference, I would just listen to whatever was playing. But middle school came around and there would be times where people would play certain songs and I had no idea what they were talking about. These were pretty common songs too, the classic throwbacks. It really wasn’t that serious but it felt like I was on the outside of things, it wasn’t a great feeling.
Feeling excluded really isn’t a great reason to start doing something but I’m glad it happened! I encouraged myself to listen to a lot of music, usually with google music since that was the only platform that wasn’t blocked on our school chromebooks. But I obviously didn’t get a huge variety of music since it was the free version that would play song radios of the song you wanted to listen to. Anyway, I continued with this for a couple years until I downloaded Spotify. Spotify was kind of a gateway app; after I downloaded Spotify, I started listening to a lot more music and started to develop a music taste instead of listening to random songs that I had heard and liked. It was interesting because I played completely different music than I listened to. I liked playing classical music but I would never listen to classical music in my free time. As I got older, music started playing a bigger role in my life.
I remember my music taste when I came to Uni was completely different than my music taste now. That’s expected; with character development comes development in music taste as well. I looked for songs that a lot of people listened to and artists that were pretty popular. I was content. As I got to know people better, I got to know their music tastes better. Music is and has been a pretty important thing in a lot of adolescent lives, it’s a way to connect with the world amongst all the teenage angst.
In the end, music is something that I think will continue to play a significant role in my life, even if I don’t continue to listen to the same music over the years. I expect my music taste to change and develop just as it has over the last couple of years. I think I take it for granted sometimes, whether it be subconsciously humming a catchy tune while graphing sine functions or subtly bopping my head to quiet music playing over the radio in the car, music truly is all around us. After all, where would we be in this world without Lil Uzi?

  1. In my opinion, one of the most interesting things about a person is their music taste. Sure some people may listen to lots of pop but I feel like there's always something to learn about a person when you learn about their music taste's history. Like that transition from a love of classical to modern rap and other stuff, it's like watching someone bloom.
